BALUCHARI SAREE
The history of a typical Baluchari Sari is traced back up to 500 years in West Bengal. It acquired its name ‘Baluchari’ from a small village in Murshidabad district of West Bengal called Baluchar. In the eighteenth century, Murshidkuli Khan, Nawab of Bengal patronized its rich weaving tradition and brought the craft of weaving this sari, from Dhaka to the Baluchar village in Murshidabad and encouraged the weavers to flourish. Due to some natural disaster, the weavers shifted their base from Baluchar to Bishnupur later and since then it is known as Bishnupuri Baluchari Saree. But still now, the craftsmen are largely based in and around Murshidabad. It requires extremely good artistry and takes around a week or so to weave one saree. Baluchari is a typical hand woven product using richly dyed tassar silk threads. The designs are mainly inspired by the mythological stories and characters from the Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. Depicting the story of Lord Krishna explaining the Bhagavad Gita to Arjun is a popular design concept of Baluchari Sarees. As it reflects the quintessential Indian Art & Culture, the look and feel of this quality product is priceless and is worn across the world as a sign of aristocracy and reputation. So much so, that the Baluchari Sari has been granted the status of geographical indication (G.I) in India for being a connoisseur’s pride.
