BANGLAR ROSOGOLLA

Rasgulla otherwise known as Rosogolla is a quintessential Bengali syrupy dessert well known in the Indian subcontinent and locales with South Asian Diasporas. It is produced from ball-shaped dumplings of chhena (an Indian cottage cheese) and semolina mixture, cooked in light syrup made of sugar. This is done until the syrup penetrates the dumplings. “Banglar Rosogolla” (Bengali Rasgulla), explaining that the Bengal and Odisha variations were diverse in “both in shading, texture, taste, juice substance and technique of manufacturing.”

In 2017, West Bengal got the coveted GI status for this Rosogolla’s. At the same time the Registry office of India explained that West Bengal was given GI status for “Banglar Rosogolla” and if Odisha wants, they can claim it as well in if they refer to the site of origin of their variant along with differences in colour, texture, taste, juice substance and technique for developing. The light white spongy rasgulla is accepted to have been introduced in present-day West Bengal in 1868 by a Kolkata-based confectioner named Nobin Chandra Das. He has popularized the original rasgulla in his sweet shop situated at Sutanuti (present-day Baghbazar). His descendants guarantee that his recipe was the most original ones among numerous claims of Kolkata and Odisha.
