BANGLAR TERRACOTTA

The word “terracotta” originates from Italy. It’s been translated as the “baked earth” and its used across the globe and has a prominent place in history. From using it as a regular flower pot or using it as a expensive flower vase in an Art gallery, or just as a disposable inexpensive teapot in a roadside tea shop, Terra cotta is being vastly used today everywhere. Bankura’s terracotta is an internationally appreciated variety. The tradition of creating terracotta craft items most possibly started from the Panchmura region of Bankura here in Bengal. It all started from the Vaishnavism which swept through the Bengal in 16th century and The Vishnu temples across Bengal was adorned with the Terracotta decorated facades and intricate artworks till 19th century.

Traditional terracotta products like statues, flower vase,, home décor items, pots and jewelry are common in any Bengali household. The artists of Panchmura makes large items ranging from depiction of daily chores , landscape like garden, park, mountains or streams to artistic depiction of local festivities recent events.
