BARDDHAMAN SITABHOG

Sitabhog, as the name promises is known mythically as a sweet dish favored by none other than Mother Sita in Ramayana but history has its own tale to tell. On 1904, Lord Curzon visited Bardhaman on invitation of Maharaja Vijaychand Mahatab. To memorize the occasion and welcome the grand lunch prepared for Lord Curzon, Maharaja ordered Vairabchandra Nag, a famous sweet-maker of the town, to prepare something distinctive and unique which would astonish the Lord. Vairabchandra shouldered the responsibility and after much brainstorming launched two brand new sweets named as Sitabhog and Mihidana. Lord Curzon was surprised to have such a special and unique sweet and on his appreciation note given to the sweet maker he expressed his happiness by saying that he never had such delicious sweet ever before. Thereafter, the name and fame of these two sweets reached all over the country and abroad.

Sitabhog is basically prepared through good quality cottage cheese / chhana and powdered rice, along with fine vermicelli paste which are rolled into smooth dough. Once ready, the dough is shredded into tiny morsels and deep fried in pure ghee and gradually soaked in cardamom flavored sugar syrup. Finally it is presented along with a generous mix of small pieces of Gulab Jamuns. Burdwan’s sitabhog and mihidana made it to shine its name in the coveted list of GI (geographical indication) tag in 2017. GETGI is happy to support these authentic sweets to spread across the nation to reach out to larger consumers.
