BHAGALPUR SILK

The origin of Bhagalpur silk sarees can be traced to the city of Bhagalpur in Bihar. Once considered as the biggest trade center of Eastern India, the city is famous for its unique silk fabrics called ‘Tussah or Tusser’ and is considered as a “Silk city” of India. Tusser is one of the finest soft textured silks, which is known for its sheen and grandeur. Not only the material, Bhagalpur has a history of skilled weavers date back to a period of nearly 200 years, who excelled at weaving this unique genre of silk. Their skills passed on over many generations and kept the craftsmanship alive. As they said, the magnanimous industry of the Bhagalpur weavers is huge, with more than 35,000 handloom weavers, 25,000 live looms in Bhagalpur. Total trade of Bhagalpur is approximately 100 crores per annum, 50% comprising domestic and 50% from the export market. Around 1, 00, 000 people are appointed in the task of separating silk threads from cocoons, and spinning the yarns to weave into cloth. The customers who love the Indian heritage and tradition, Bhagalpur silk sarees are an evergreen favorite for them. What sets Bhagalpur silk apart from other varieties of silk is the fact that it is extremely environment-friendly. As very limited number of silk worms is used during the production of this silk, Bhagalpur silk is also referred as “peace silk”.
