CHHAU MASK
The Chhau mask is a traditional cultural heritage of Purulia in the Indian state of West Bengal. The main difference between the Purulia Chhau dance and the Odisha Chhau dance is in the use of the mask. Purulia Chhau uses the mask in dance, but Odisha does not. If we want to dig into the history of origin of masks in Bengal, there are lot of ambiguities but this is almost evident that masks were always of great religious significance because of the idea in spells. Tribal priests would wear these masks and exhibit various magic skills. Thus masks became a preferred prop in Bengali culture, many of them getting used in various dance forms performed to appease the demon gods and to inaugurate peace in addition as prosperity.
The Purulia Chhau masks are usually made at Charida village at Baghmundi block of Purulia. More than 500 families of Charida are involved in this. Chhau masks are mainly made by the Sutradhar communities and the making is an elaborate process too. Using Paper pulp, mud and clay pasted in layers with the help of diluted glue, they create a specific mythological character in the mask. Its vibrant colors, amazing facial expressions made it so unique in nature that in 2010 the Chhau dance was inscribed in the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the Chhau masks are getting a lot of attention too. It has been identified by the Geographical Identification (GI) lately.
