KARVATI KATI & FEBRIC
It’s quirky but that’s how it is. The Karvat-kathi (saw-edged) sari of Vidarbha is named after its border design which resembles saw-teeth. Karvat Kathi sarees originated exclusively from Bhandara and Nagpur district in Maharashtra is a threatened art form now, standing almost on the verge of extinction due to low wages for the weavers. Karvat sarees represents the age old tradition of weaving worn during rituals and social functions across the state of Maharashtra. The fabric is a desi tussar silk, which is extremely durable and which has a rich golden hue which looks very elegant too. Typically a Karvat Kathi Saree is being woven on a pit loom under very strict conditions. There are always chances of breaking of the fine silk threads, so sometime it involves more than 8-10 hours a day using repetitive motions of hands and legs, which requires a huge craftsmanship, enduring skill and patience. Experiencing these throughout an average of 7-10 days for the weaving time creates such a timeless piece. As of 2017, there are only about 170 weavers left who have this unmatchable skill which is slowly dwindling as the years goes by.
For the Handloom lovers Karvat Kathi Sarees surely need no further introduction and will be a treasure forver in their collections. It is heartening that this saree has got the GI (Geographical Tag) thanks to the efforts of Maharashtra State Handloom Corporation, which is expected to increase the sales in an international market as well as across the country.
