LAKHNOW ZARDOZI
The word Zardozi comes from two Persian words: zar or zarin meaning ‘gold’, and dozi meaning ‘sewing’. Zardozi is a kind of heavy and elaborate metal embroidery on a base of silk, satin, or velvet fabric. The intricate and unique Designs are often created using gold and silver threads and might incorporate pearls, beads, and precious / semi-precious stones. Gold embroidery has existed in India since the time of the Rig-Veda, between 1500 and 1200 BC. This Persian embroidery form, prospered during the 17th century during the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar. Till then it became popular in northern India. Today, zardozi Embroidery artworks are popular within the Indian cities like Lucknow, Farrukhabad, Chennai and Bhopal. But the “Lucknow Zardozi” brand created such a singular mark of authenticity, that it received the Geographical Indication (GI) registration mark.
