ODISHA PATCHITRA

The subject matter of Odisha Patta Chitra is equally inspired by the mythological stories and the depiction of it but there are a few differences which separated both of it from the design aspect. Depicting the mythological, religious stories and folk lore, the Odisha themes are chiefly on Lord Jagannath and Radha-Krishna and the Vaishnava sect. Different “Vesas” of Shri Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, temple activities, the ten incarnations of Vishnu etc. The typical Odisha Pattachitra can be divided into three categories from the point of view of the medium, i.e. paintings on cloth known as ‘Patta Chitra’, wall paintings known as ‘Bhitti Chitra’ and palm leaf engravings known as “Tala Patra Chitra’ or “Pothi, Chitra’. The ancient tradition of Odisha painting still survives in the places like Puri, Raghurajpur, Paralakhemundi, Chikiti and Sonepur. The Pattachitra styles are mix of both folk and classical elements but leanings more towards the traditional touch of Odisha. The Odiya artists also use vegetable and mineral colors without going for factory-made poster colours. The 1,400-year-old Pattachitra painting, the palm leaf engravings of Odisha has received a Geographical Indication (GI) logo to brand the unique art form across the globe. This has been a pivotal decision and has been proved as a major stimulus for the well acclaimed brand.
