PHULKARI
Phulkari refers to the traditional folk embroidery of the Punjab. Although Phulkari the word literally translated to floral work, the designs include not only flowers but also cover motifs and geometrical shapes which carry the cultural legacy of Punjab. The main characteristics of Phulkari embroidery are use of darn stitch on the wrong side of coarse cloth with colored silken thread. Punjabi women create innumerable alluring and interesting designs and patterns by their skilful manipulation of the darn stitch on it, which made this an incredible example of Indian Art & Culture. The typical motifs spun out of the untwisted floss of silk, which is known as the pat, are cleverly fitted within the grids, representing the life & story in the small hamlets of Punjab. Different Phulkari designs are reserved for different occasions. There are various types of Phulkari stitches available in India. Such as Thirma, Darshan Dwar, Surajmukhi, Panchranga, Meenakari and a lot more. In the year 2011, Phulkari was finally awarded the geographical indication (GI) status in India, after a five-year-long legal dispute, which clearly permitted the registered traders and manufacturers, especially from the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan to use the term for this traditional craft & do business accordingly.
