RAJASTHANI KATHPUTLI
We have seen them in folklore, film and multiple folk arts from Rajasthan. The typical Kathputli is a string puppet performance which is an ancient and very popular form of folk entertainment in the state. A Kathputli basically means puppets made of wood and decorated in colorful clothes .Kathputli dance and performance is one of the major tourist attractions of Rajasthan. The Bhatt community, a society of agricultural laborers of Rajasthan, mostly from Jodhpur and Jaipur makes these puppets as well as performs with them. It remains their traditional occupation. Originally they belong, to the Nagaur area in the Marwar region; These people travels all through the countryside’s, from places to places to exhibit their storytelling skills along with this mesmerizing performance of finger play.
The puppets are usually two feet in height having a wooden head with a huge nose and large eyes. The rest of the body is prepared of colorful and bright pieces of attires and stuffed clothes which also allow them to move freely. Unless they are horse riders, the puppets have no legs but are covered with a long pleated skirt. The puppet has a long thread for the head which reaches the manipulator and then joins the middle”;” the threads from the two hands of the puppet are tied to the hands of the manipulator. While they begin a show a loud beats of dholak announces the beginning and then a female from the group narrates the story with appropriate songs and drum beats. The puppets in Rajasthan are one of the well-known sources of amusement in the state. Except the puppet show, the Kathputli ( the wooden dolls ) are the essential part of the heritage, Art and craft of Rajasthan and thus it has been geographically identified by the government of India.
